Narratus Interruptus

I’ve decided there is no value in the adage of always expecting the unexpected, it sounds like profound wisdom but in practice, I’ve found that as I expect the unexpected, the unexpected never occurs. It is only when I no longer expect it that it occurs. It is not possible to expect the unexpected. The genius philosopher who first coined that adage may want to consider returning to his day job writing fortune cookies.

Just as I was getting on a roll with this blog project, the unexpected happened; I was struck by a mysterious medical condition that affected two (and only two) muscles in my legs, one in each leg symmetrically , and robbed me of my walking ability — nothing serious as I have since almost fully recovered. But the event did force me to return home from Iowa and head straight to Cedars-Sinai Hospital where I am now and have been since last week, undergoing a series of tests administered by a group of specialists who resembled the primates dancing around the monolith in Kubrick’s 2001, trying to figure out what made my two muscles stop working and then start working again. There is not a shortage of theories coming from these professionals whose vocabulary apparently does not include the phrase “I don’t know.” Still, the mystery has yet to be solved and I am scheduled to leave the hospital tomorrow. They wanted to send me to rehab but I said “no, no, no.” I’m going home!

I’ve been deeply gratified and appreciative of all the feedback I’ve received from all the readers since I began this project, and in response to many of you who have wondered why I’ve not posted anything in a while, I promise I will get back to it as soon as I can reestablish a routine.

… Absent another unexpected event, of course…

Thank you for your patience.

  1. Ooh, that’s a challenging turn of health and events, Jacques.

Glad to hear you’re back to improved health. The body is an amazing and mysterious machine sometimes.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery and return to your road trip and project.

  2. So how long were you sitting in that car while driving and what angle was the seat at? Could have been pressing on some nerves. Was in the top row at the recent Trump rally in Sunrise FL at the arena where the Panthers play. It seats 20,00 and was standing room only inside and outside. Need a shot of goodwill and energy, go to one! Good thoughts coming your way!
